PRINCE BODYGUARDS ARRESTED FOR BEATING DOWN PHOTOGRAPHERS

Two bodyguards for Prince were arrested for assault after the telecast of the American Music Awards today (January 29, 1985).

Police said the two bodyguards assaulted two photographers who were attempting to get a shot of Prince, as he exited a restaurant in Los Angeles around 2:30 in the morning.

Instead of Prince, the two photographers met his 6’9 bodyguard Lawrence Gibson and his companion Wallace Safford.

The bodyguards demanded the pictures and when they were met with with resistance, they pummeled the photographers.

Lawrence Gibson was charged with robbery and assault and his bail was set at $6,000 while Safford was hit with assault and was released on $500 bail.

Waxfact: Lawrence Gibson was also the bouncer at the “First Avenue” club in the hit film “Purple Rain.”
