Singer Sade was arrested today (February 27, 1997) in Jamaica, after an incident with local police is Montego Bay.
The singer, born Helen Folasade Adu, was driving along the main thorofare in Montego Bay, when she allegedly failed to obey an officer who ordered her to stop.
Police gave chase, and eventually stopped the singer, who allegedly cussed the officers, before being charged with dangerous driving and disobeying a police officer.
An arrest warrant was eventually issued for Sade in Jamaica, since she failed to appear at three separate court hearings.
In later interviews, Sade, who was banned from returning to the country until 2002, claimed that the officer who pulled her over for the minor traffic incident “wanted a bribe,” which she refused to pay.
Sade, who has sold over 50 million records, currently lives in the United Kingdom.
