Soul singer James Brown received the lifetime achievement award at the Grammys today (February 25, 1992).
James Brown was given the honor during the 34th annual ceremony, which took place in New York.
In addition to James Brown, Muddy Waters John Cole train and Jimi Hendrix were awarded the lifetime achievement awards during the ceremony.
The ceremony was not without controversy. Some critics felt that portions of the telecast should’ve been broadcast from the famous Harlem Apollo, since it was being held in New York.
“The next time that the Grammys come back to New York the people Haarlem deserve and demand that part of the Grammy awards beheld and televise from Harlem’s world-famous Apollo theater,” New York State assemblywoman Geraldine Daniel said in a press release.
When singer Michael Bolton took home an award for best male vocalist in the pop category for his song “When a Man Loves a Woman,” it prompted some outcry.
Michael Bolton remained defiant and accepted his win, responding to complaints by saying “critics who are insensitive and rude people can kiss my ass.”
