Famous soul singer/songwriter Barbara Mason was born today (August 9, 1947).
Barbara Mason, highly regarded as one of the “true pioneers of Philly Soul,” was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Since her school days, Barbara showed great potential as a music artist by teaching herself how to play on her grandmother’s piano at the age of 12.
Barbara also formed several groups and would perform as the lead singer, as well as the songwriter.
Mason’s early hits were mostly tales of young girl woes, with a sweet soulful sound. However in the 1970’s, Barbara Mason updated her sound to a seedier side, by singing songs about sex and infidelity.
Barbara Mason charted many hits, her most famous to date being “Yes, I’m Ready,” which peaked at number two on the R&B charts.
She retired from the entertainment industry in the early 1980’s to concentrate on forming and developing her own publishing company Marc James Music, which is named after her son, whom she conceived with Jimmy Bishop, her manager and producer during her time at Buddah Records.
Currently, Barbara Mason does not have a recording contract, but she is still passionate about singing, saying:
“Yes, I am looking for a record deal. If someone would love to record m, I’m probably in better voice than I’ve ever been. I’m in better form. I’m ready to do it. No matter what I’ll always sing. I never wanna stop singing. That’s what I’ve always dreamed of doing and it came true.”
