Eclectic R&B singer Prince debuted his new backing band The Revolution today (August 3, 1983).
The band made its debut at the legendary First Avenue Club, in Minneapolis Minnesota. Prince was hosting a benefit concert for The Minnesota Dance Theater.
He also took the time to record some of the tracks for “Purple Rain” live.
The August 3 show was also the debut for guitarist Wendy Melvion, who stayed The Revolution until 1986.
Prince included some of the live performances from the August 3 show and eventually released Purple Rain, his sixth studio album, on June 25, 1984.
The album, which was the soundtrack to the movie of the same title, would earn the singer two Grammy awards in 1985, for Best Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture.
