Singer Sonny Turner was announced as the lead replacement for Tony Williams in the classic group The Platters today (June 6th, 1960).
Tony Williams himself introduced Sonny Turner as the new lead singer when The Platters performed at the Copa Club in Newport, Kentucky.
Legendary manager Buck Ram continued to manage the group, as well as Tony Williams as a solo artist.
Mercury eventually filed a lawsuit against the group and refused to release any records without Tony Williams on the lead.
With Sonny Turner on lead and a new lineup that included Nate Williams, former lead of The Flamingos, The Platters hit the chart again.
From 1966-67, the group hit the charts with with the singles “I Love You 1000 Times,” “With This Ring,” and the classic “Washed Ashore.”
Sonny Turner sang the lead on these three records.
