Hank Ballard and the Midnighters recorded the original version of “The Twist” which would later become one of the most important records in Rock and Roll history as sung by Ballard sound-alike, Chubby Checker. Ballard’s version was based on the Drifters’ 1953 recording, “Watcha Gonna Do”. Chubby Checkers single became a hit, reaching number one on the BillboardHot 100 on September 19, 1960 (one week), and then setting a record by being the only single to reach number one in two different chart runs when it resurfaced and topped the chart again on January 13, 1962 (two weeks)
