One of The Dells’ lead singers, Johnny Carter, was robbed and a female companion was shot, it was reported today (July 30, 1970).

Chicago police said the veteran singer, who was also a member of Doo-Wop group The Flamingos, was flashing a wad of money he hadĀ received after several performances.

Two black youth, one wielding a sawed-off shotgun and the other a handgun, held up Johnny Carter and Emily Congo, 24.

Carter and friends had stoppedĀ at a South Side liquor store to buy ice.

The bandits relieved the singer of $1,000 in cash and two diamond rings valued at $1,000 a piece.

Emily Congo, the woman with Carter, was shot after she attempted to conceal $60 in her pants.
