Savoy Records signed “Little” Sylvia Vanderpool to the label it was announced today (August 18, 1951).
Little Sylvia was signed to the label, and was backed by the Heywood Henry Orchestra.
Savoy touted “Little Sylvia,” as the successor to Little Esther, who had left the label for Federal Records.
She released several sides for the Savoy and Jubilee, before she met guitarist Mickey Baker.
In 1956, the 21-year-old singer recorded the classic song “Love Is Strange,” with Mickey Baker as “Mickey & Sylvia.
Throughout her career, Sylvia formed several major influential record labels.
In 1964, she married her husband/business partner Joe Robinson, and the pair started their label All Platinum label.
All Platinum released sides by Sylvia, The Moments, The Whatnauts and others.
Sylvia and Joe Robinson were also the founders of Sugar Hill records, the imprint that released groundbreaking influential Hip-Hop records by artists like Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, The Sugar Hill Gang and others.
