Singer Janis Joplin hit the stage for an iconic performance with Tina Turner today (November 27, 1969).
The performance between the two legendary singers took place during a Rolling Stones concert at Madison Square Garden, in New York City.
Ike and Tina were on tour with The Rolling Stones throughout much of 1969, as they promoted the album Beggars Banquet, which included the radical, controversial track “Street Fighting Man.”
Janis Joplin was a huge fan of black music and several of her most famous tunes were originally by black artists.
Janis’ song “Piece of My Heart” was originally recorded by Erma Franklin (Aretha’s older sister), while her gut wrenching version of “Ball and Chain” was originally done by Big Mama Thornton.
Janis Joplin also considered Tina Turner the greatest performer in all of the music industry.
Just over a week later, The Rolling Stones would host the infamous Altamont free concert in Northern California, on December 6, 1969, where the Hells Angels killed a black concertgoer named Meredith Hunter.
Tragically, a little over one year after her performance with Tina Turner, Janis Joplin was found dead of heroin/alcohol overdose.
