Mahlia Jackson’s funeral was held at today (January 31, 1972) at The Arie Crown Theater, where singers like Sammy Davis Jr, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Lou Rawls and Dick Gregory paid their respects.
During the two-hour funeral, Aretha Franklin saying “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” while Lou Rawls crooned “Just a Walk With Thee.”
Aretha Franklin’s father, Rev. C.L. Franklin gave the invocation.
“We didn’t come here to cry; we didn’t come here with hung down heads, we came here to rejoice! For we know, now, that she has laid her heavy burdens down.”
