Johnny AceRising R&B star Johnny Ace shot himself in the head today (December 25, 1954) while backstage at Houston’s City Auditorium.

Johnny Ace, born John Marshall Alexander, was playing a game of Russian roulette with his girlfriend when the tragedy occurred.

Ace had finished singing “Yes, Baby Yes” to 3,000 screaming fans. During a 5 minute intermission, he went back stage, where his girlfriend Olivia Gibbs, Mary Carter and Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton were sitting amongst others. (continue reading RareSoul.com)...

Gene Chandler The Chicago-Tribune reports today (December 22,1976) that R&B star Gene Chandler was convicted for his role in a heroin sale in May and June of this year.

The “Duke of Earl” was convicted on three counts in U.S. District Court in Chicago for selling a total of 462.9 grams of the drug to federal undercover agents on May 9 and June 8 of 1976. (continue reading RareSoul.com)...
