Dyke of Dyke and The Blazers

Dyke Christian of Dyke and The Blazers was shot and killed today (March 13th 1971) in his car in Phoenix, Arizona. Dyke, 27, was killed by a character named One Eyed Clancy who Dyke owed money to for heroin.

Dyke and The Blazers are best known for their hit record “Funky Broadway.” According to sources Dyke could not leave his old acquaintances from the streets behind and over time developed, a heroin addiction.

One Eyed Clancy’s real name was Clarence Daniel and Dyke believed he was a undercover police officer. (continue reading RareSoul.com)...

Whitfield Records

Legendary Motown producer Norman Whitfield announced the formation of his own label, Whitfield Records in today’s issue of Billboard magazine (March 11, 1971).

Whitfield was responsible for ushering Motown into the 1970’s with his “psychedelic soul” genre of music.

Describing the burned-out remains of their historic “Sound of Philadelphia” offices as “total devastation,” legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songwriter-producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff held a press conference today to express their outrage and sorrow from seeing the iconic birthplace of Philly Soul Music ravaged early Sunday by a fire termed “suspicious” by officials.

Despite the extensive damage to the third-floor at 309 S.
