R&B singer Roberta Flack canceled her first Japanese concert tour today (July 24, 1974).
Roberta Flack was scheduled to perform in several jet several cities in Japan from July 24 through August 4.
According to reports at the time, eight of Roberta Flack’s dates were sold out, according to local promoters.
Roberta Flack came down with laryngitis, just as her single “Feel Like Makin Love,” was shooting to #1 on the pop charts.
Roberta Flack had been on a run of hits since 1971, when she hit the charts with Donny Hathaway on the duet “You’ve Got A Friend.”
In 1972, Roberta Flack’s single “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” topped the charts, as did the 1973 song “Killing Me Softly with His Song.”
Just as “Feel Like Makin Love” was heading to the top of the charts, Roberta Flack experienced problems with her voice.
In total, concert promoters lost between $60,000 and $80,000 in ticket sales in 1974.
Japanese fans were treated to a pair of singers as a replacement: Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge.
