Legendary trumpetest Louis Armstrong received a tracheotomy today (March 25, 1971).

Armstrong had developed a lung infection, and the surgery became mandatory in order to treat his ailment, doctors at Beth Israel Hospital said.

A week earlier, Louis Armstrong had been admitted to the hospital for heart troubles, which were also tended to during his visit to Beth Israel Hospital.

The legendary, 71-year-old trumpet player never recovered. He died of a heart attack on July 6, 1971.
