Soul singer Lou Rawls hosted his “Lou Rawls Parade of stars” today (December 29, 1984).

Kool & The Gang, Billy Dee Williams, Mr. T, Donna Summer, Bill Cosby and Dianne Carol were among the 50 entertainers who appeared on the telethon.

The broadcast, which was the first ever national telethon aired by a black organization, raised money for the United Negro College Fund.

The evening’s cohosts was singer Marilyn McCoo and Ed McMahon of “The Tonight Show.”

The annual event has been in existence since 1980, to raise funds for the United Negro College Fund.

Since its inception in 1980, the telethon has raised over $200 million.
